School's Out... Now What?
Well.
We made it.
The lunch boxes are emptied (hopefully).
The last permission slip has been signed.
The backpacks have been tossed into a corner somewhere.
And for about five glorious minutes, summer feels magical.
Then somebody says:
"I'm bored."
And just like that, we're all wondering...
School's out. Now what?
If you're anything like me, you started summer with visions of educational activities, organized crafts, family memories, and smiling children.
And then reality showed up.
Reality looks more like:
-
a kitchen that somehow needs cleaning again
-
kids asking for snacks every 17 minutes
-
a house that sounds like a zoo
-
and somebody arguing over who looked at who
It's fine. Everything is fine. 😅
The Truth About Summer
I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves.
Social media makes it look like every family is spending summer:
-
hiking mountains
-
doing science experiments
-
making homemade popsicles
-
and creating core memories every waking moment
Meanwhile, many of us are just trying to survive until bedtime.
And honestly?
That's okay.
Your kids do not need a Pinterest-perfect summer.
They need:
-
time outside
-
time reading
-
time exploring
-
time being bored
-
and time with people who love them
That's really it.
Boredom Isn't an Emergency
I know.
The minute a child says, "I'm bored," something inside us feels like we should fix it.
But boredom isn't actually bad.
Boredom is where:
-
imagination happens
-
creativity happens
-
backyard adventures happen
Some of my favorite childhood memories came from having absolutely nothing planned.
A stick became a sword.
A cardboard box became a fort.
The woods became an entire world.
Kids today still need some of that.
Not every moment has to be scheduled.
Pick a Few Priorities
Instead of trying to do everything, pick a few things that matter most.
Maybe that's:
-
reading every day
-
swimming once a week
-
visiting the library
-
learning to cook
-
spending more time outside
That's enough.
Summer doesn't need a complicated curriculum to be successful.
Let Real Life Count as Learning
This might be my favorite summer secret.
Learning doesn't only happen at a desk.
Baking teaches:
-
math
-
reading
-
following directions
Gardening teaches:
-
science
-
patience
-
responsibility
Running a lemonade stand teaches:
-
communication
-
money management
-
problem solving
Helping with chores teaches life skills they'll actually use someday.
Not everything educational has to look educational.
Give Yourself Some Grace Too
Moms, let's make a deal.
Let's stop comparing our summer to somebody else's highlight reel.
Some days you'll take the kids somewhere amazing.
Some days you'll hand them a popsicle and tell them to go outside.
Both count.
Some days you'll read together.
Some days you'll order pizza and watch a movie.
Both count.
A good summer isn't built from perfect days.
It's built from ordinary days spent together.
So... Now What?
Take a deep breath.
You do not need to entertain your children every minute of every day.
You do not need a color-coded schedule.
You do not need to create a magical childhood single-handedly.
Just start with today.
Read a book.
Take a walk.
Bake cookies.
Play outside.
Visit a local park.
Stop by the library.
Make a memory.
Then do it again tomorrow.
And if all else fails?
There's always popsicles.
Happy Summer, friends. 💛
